The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with assistance from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), and Fire and Rescue NSW, is planning a hazard reduction burn in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park starting Wednesday 15 April 2026.
The favourable autumn weather conditions provide a critical opportunity for the 85 hectares burn immediately north of Mt Ku-ring-gai township and the M1 Motorway to increase protection for neighbours as well as the Park.
Prior to the burn commencing, staff and colleagues will reflect and pay their respects to remember the 4 NPWS staff who lost their lives and a further 3 staff who were injured in a hazard reduction burn in this area in June 2000.
Public access to burn areas will be closed during the operations and re-opened once it is safe.
Motorists are advised to take care and drive to conditions as smoke may impact nearby areas.
People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors and follow their health plan.
Closed area will be reopened once these have been assessed as safe. Visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on closures.
If you are vulnerable to smoke, try to stay indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure.
