Flash flooding, storm damage and minor riverine rises are possible if forecast severe thunderstorms come to fruition on Saturday afternoon in the New England, Tweed, Northern Rivers and North West Slopes regions.
Thunderstorm activity is forecast to peak on Saturday, when isolated dangerous thunderstorms could bring destructive wind gusts of up to 125 km/hr and giant hailstones up to 5cm in diameter.
More broadly across the state, unsettled conditions are expected in the Central West Slopes and Plains, Upper Hunter and in the Blue Mountains over the weekend. These communities could see damaging wind gusts and localised heavy rainfall.
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said intense winds were a key risk and could cause significant storm damage.
"Our NSW SES volunteers are prepared to respond, but we're urging the community to do their bit too and prepare for the impacts of severe thunderstorms," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.
"People in the forecast areas, particularly around Tamworth, Moree and Armidale, should tie down loose items outside their homes, clear their gutters and trim any overhanging branches now before the weather is due to hit."
While minor riverine flooding is possible, flash flooding is likely and could happen quickly without much warning.
"Flash flooding is dangerous, and people should never take the risk of driving through floodwaters. If you come across a flooded road, stop and find an alternative route," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.
