NSW police charge youth over Redfern aggravated robberies

A youth has been charged over several aggravated robberies at Redfern at the weekend.

The first incident occurred about 2.40am on Saturday (2 March 2019), when a 29-year-old man was approached by four males on George Street, Redfern, and allegedly assaulted.

The man's wallet and mobile phone were stolen.

The injured man was taken to Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

About 3.20am the same day, a second 29-year-old man was approached by four males outside a residence on Elizabeth Street, Redfern. The man was allegedly punched, before his bag containing cash, an iPhone and other personal items were stolen.

The man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment to facial injuries including a broken nose.

About 3.30am, a 42-year-old man was walking on Elizabeth Street, near Phillip Street, Redfern, when he was allegedly approached by four men and assaulted.

The man's wallet and bag were stolen, before the group fled. He did not seek medical treatment.

Officers from Redfern Police Area Command were notified of the incidents and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, just before 1.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 5 March 2019), a 17-year-old boy was arrested on Albion Street, Surry Hills.

The youth was taken to Redfern Police Station and charged with robbery in company (x3).

He was refused bail to appear at a children's court today (Wednesday 6 March 2019).

It will be alleged the robberies and assaults were opportunistic in nature and there is no information to suggest they are motivated by gay-hate bias.

Inquiries continue and police would like to speak to three males who may be able to assist with the inquiries.
