Police are urging spectators to be responsible, travel safely, and have fun as the 2018 World Rally Championship gets into gear at Kennards Hire Rally Australia on the Coffs Coast this weekend, NSW Police say.
Drivers will take to the track tomorrow (Friday 16 November 2018), for the 318km WRC finale of the Australasian leg of the FIA World Rally Championship, Kennards Hire Rally Australia, and compete until Sunday 18 November 2018.
Operation Hillclimb has been launched today (Thursday 15 November 2018), and will continue until Monday 19 November 2018, to ensure the safety and security of competitors, officials and spectators expected around Coffs Harbour this weekend.
General duties officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District and across Northern Region will be assisted by specialist police from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command and Licensing Police throughout the operation.
Operation Hillclimb Commander, Superintendent Steve Clarke, was joined by Rally Australia Chairman Ben Rainsford this morning to officially launch the operation.
"For six years the Coffs Coast has played host to the FIA World Rally Championship, and we are excited to see it return for what we hope will be another safe and successful event," Supt Clarke said.
"Police will be out in force this weekend focusing on road safety as well as anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence.
"We want everyone to have a good time and enjoy the event, so anyone who chooses to break the law or create issues for other racegoers by behaving badly can expect to be caught and dealt with swiftly.
"The message is simple – do not drink to excess and if you’re planning on driving, please make sure you have a Plan B, like a designated driver.
"If you are heading to Coffs Harbour for the event drive carefully and allow extra time as there may be heavy traffic and some delays on major and local roads.
"We want to make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely and motorists are reminded to leave the rallying to the professionals," Supt Clarke said.
"We’re grateful for the major contribution of the NSW Police Force and the other emergency services in ensuring we deliver our spectators a well-managed rally," said Kennards Hire Rally Chairman Ben Rainsford.
"We also thank all those who attend, whose responsible behaviour every year ensures Rally Australia provide a fun and safe family atmosphere," said Mr Rainsford.
