Police are urging motorists to take caution on the roads as a storm moves through the Alpine region of New South Wales, NSW Police say.
A severe weather warning for destructive winds and heavy rainfall has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, ACT, and parts of the Hunter, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Riverina, and Snowy Mountains.
For areas above 1300 metres in the Alpine area, destructive winds are expected to average up to 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h.
Heavy rainfall, that could lead to flash flooding, is likely in the Alpine region. This includes areas such as Cooma, Jindabyne, and Adaminaby.
Chief Inspector Michael Tranby from Cooma Police has urged motorists to take care on the roads.
"If you can, delay travel while the storm passes over. If you have to use the roads, slow down and drive to the conditions. There may be flooding over the roads. Be patient and never drive into floodwaters," Chief Inspector Tranby said.
