NSW residents optimistic about their energy future

New research has revealed that New South Wales residents are optimistic about their energy future, looking to new technologies in the home alongside renewable generation to simplify their energy usage and management.

According to the Good Energy Report commissioned by Origin Energy, the majority  of regional Australians are calling on government to provide clearer policy direction to help the transition to future energy technology, with 78 per cent agreeing or strongly agreeing that Australian federal and state government should align on energy policy and 64% believed that energy companies should be focused on transitioning to a clean energy future.

As well as changes in energy sources, Regional Australians are also anticipating changes in the technology that will help them manage their energy and their lives – 56% think that new energy technologies will revolutionise how Australians use and purchase energy in their homes, 51% believe that new technologies will make it easier to manage electricity consumption and bills, and 39% think that new technologies in energy generation, storage, and measurement will make their lives easier within the next 2 years.

State-based research:

  • 38 per cent of NSW residents believe they are paying the lowest price available or a lower price than other competitor retailers, while 15 per cent believe they are paying more or slightly more on their tariffs compared to competitor retailers.
  • 31 per cent of NSW residents believe their home energy bills will be lower than they are today within the next five years.
  • 58 per cent of NSW resident said they agreed or strongly agreed that it is hard to predict what their actual cost on their annual energy expenditure
  • 53 per cent said they do not know which appliances are contributing to their energy bills (slightly higher than the national average of 48 per cent)
  • When looking at measures taken by NSW to reduce bills:
    • 66 per cent said they would try and get a better deal from their current electricity provider
    • 40 per cent said they would change electricity retailer
    • 76 per cent said they would cut back on their energy use, (such as switching off lights or reducing heating/cooling)
    • 63 per cent said they would purchase energy-efficient appliances
  • 22 per cent of NSW residents stated they receive their energy from solar panels
