Widespread heavy rainfall, damaging winds and thunderstorms are expected as conditions worsen across the South Coast, Illawarra and Shoalhaven, before thunderstorm activity is likely to extend into Sydney, the Hunter and Mid North Coast over the coming days.

Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast this evening and into Friday on the South Coast, with six hourly rainfall totals of 50 to 100mm expected and isolated totals of up to 150mm possible.

People camping in bushland or near trees are being urged to act now, as large hail and damaging winds could be a risk with forecast severe thunderstorms.

On Friday, parts of the Hunter, Mid North Coast and Central Tablelands may see severe storms. It is possible for supercell thunderstorms develop and cause destructive winds and giant hail.

Creeks and rivers could rise quickly and water may cover roads in some areas during thunderstorms when flash flooding can occur with little or no warning.

NSW SES crews on the South Coast have been engaging communities in high-risk areas, including popular camping locations at Bendethra and right along the south coast, to warn campers that today is the safest opportunity to pack up ahead of worsening conditions.

Some campgrounds, including national parks, have already been closed as a precaution and NSW SES resources have been pre-positioned to allow for a rapid response if required.

NSW SES Chief Superintendent Dallas Burnes urged people to prepare early and said the school holiday period increased the risk for people camping or travelling in exposed locations.

"We are asking people to be particularly cautious if they are camping near creeks, rivers or lakes, as water levels can rise quickly and cut off road access," Chief Superintendent Burnes said.

"Heavy rain is forecast to continue for several days in some areas, and campers may become isolated if they do not leave ahead of the severe weather.

"Coastal communities along the south coast are advised to remain vigilant, with all locations that typically experience flooding during high tides being warned they could be impacted during this weather event."
