NSW SES Mobilizes Amid Rising Northeastern Rainfall

NSW SES members have responded to more than 240 incidents, as scattered thunderstorms bring moderate rainfall to the central east, northeast and northern inland.

Rainfall is forecast to increase across the Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter and adjacent districts from early Thursday evening as a low-pressure system brings the risk of localised heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

The severe weather is expected to spread south through the Mid North Coast, and Hunter on Friday.

Daily rainfall totals of 20-40mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 100mm possible. Intense 6-hour rainfall rates of 70-100mm are possible in isolated areas associated with thunderstorms.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said the most significant risk with the forecast weather was flash flooding.

"Flash flooding can occur quickly and without much warning. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route," Assistant Commissioner Malone said.

"We've prepositioned high clearance vehicles in preparation for the severe weather, including at Maitland, Taree, Lismore and Narrabri, and we have flood rescue teams on standby."

Prolonged rainfall may cause river level rises, and minor flooding is possible along the Orara, Manning and Gloucester, Bellinger, Hastings, Paterson and William Rivers and parts of the Hunter River from Thursday into Friday.

NSW SES has issued 10 advice-level warnings for communities across the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands to stay informed about predicted minor flooding.

Severe thunderstorms may also bring the risk of damaging winds and large hail, before conditions ease from Saturday.

"Residents are encouraged to prepare their homes before the storms impact by tying down loose items, trimming branches, clearing your gutters and parking your cars away from trees and powerlines," Assistant Commissioner Malone said.
