NSW SES Preps for Weekend Coastal Low Washout

NSW SES

Heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large surf are expected across much of the north coast and adjacent ranges this weekend, and the NSW SES has issued flood warnings for catchments in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Coffs Coast and New England regions.

With conditions set to worsen from Friday night into Saturday, residents are encouraged to stay informed and act early.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan ESM urged people in the impacted areas to understand their risk and prepare their properties.

"Check your gutters, trim branches, and secure outdoor furniture or trampolines before winds pick up. These simple steps can prevent serious damage," Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.

"Due to the forecast rainfall, some roads could become flooded and impassable, so above all, never drive through floodwaters. If the road is flooded, stop, turn around and find another way."

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast, with daily totals of 65 to 100mm, and local falls exceeding 130mm, which is likely to cause flash flooding and further riverine rises.

Minor flooding is possible for catchments in Hunter, Mid Nort Coast and Coffs Coast. Flooding is also possible for the Peel River at Tamworth and Namoi River at Gunnedah.

Damaging wind gusts exceeding 90km/h are forecast along northern and central parts of the coast and adjacent ranges, and could cause significant storm damage and debris.

Assistant Commissioner Hogan said the NSW SES had prepared ahead of time for the impacts of the low-pressure system by pre-deploying teams and assets into high-risk areas.

"Flood rescue teams, high clearance vehicles and helicopters are pre-positioned, but the best protection is preparation by the community," she said.

"If you haven't already, download the Hazards Near Me App and set a watch zone for your local community to get alerts on the latest information and warnings."
