Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliott today launched Get Ready Animals - a new online resource to help owners plan for their animals in emergencies.
Developed by the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW), in partnership with the NSW Department of Industries and other key stakeholders, and funded by Resilience NSW, the website features animal specific resources, including emergency plans, fact sheets, community capacity building tips, and social media resources.
A pilot social media campaign in December 2019 saw people flock to download the Animal Emergency Plan on a Page and learn how to pack a Pet Grab and Go Bag.
Minister Elliot said it was vitally important that owners plan ahead and know what to do to protect and shelter their animals in the event of an emergency.
"The 2019/2020 bushfire season saw more than 12,000 animals registered at evacuation centres and animal safer places around NSW," Minister Elliott said.
"This highlights the need for owners to plan ahead, particularly for large numbers of animals, horses and livestock.
"In recent weeks, NSW SES volunteers have assisted in more 30 animal-related flood rescues, ranging from dogs, horses, sheep, cattle and donkeys.
"These situations have been dangerous for volunteers, owners and the animals.
"By having a plan in place, the risks are greatly reduced and animals are protected."
With more severe weather events likely in the months ahead, NSW SES Commissioner, Carlene York is urging people to start planning now.
"Emergencies can happen at any time and it is our responsibility to keep our animals safe," Commissioner York said.
"There are many resources available on the website including How to Build an Animal Ready Community which is a great guide to help communities and animal groups become more prepared and self-reliant. Children can also get involved with Pets Passport .
