NSW SES Urges Preparedness After Blue Mountains Rescue

NSW SES

Thirteen members from NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue and Blue Mountains West Units assisted NSW Police in the search at the Blue Mountains National Park, in a remote section of the Megalong Valley, alongside NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Ambulance.

The bushwalker was located by NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue members after activating his personal locator beacon, where he was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and airlifted to hospital at about 7.30pm.

NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue Deputy Unit Commander Caro Ryan OAM said it was a fantastic outcome following a 12-hour search and rescue operation in rugged and steep terrain.

"We were pleased to hear this gentleman was prepared with a personal locator beacon, which was critical in helping us find him safely," she said.

"We'd like to remind anyone else heading out in the bush to think before you 'TREK'. That includes taking enough water, food, equipment and medical supplies, registering your trip, carrying an emergency personal locator beacon and keeping to your planned route.

"If you do happen to find yourself lost in the bush, some tips for setting off your beacon include not waiting until it is getting dark. If you set off your Beacon early, there is enough daylight for rescuers to come and get you.

"I'd also like to encourage bushwalkers to have some fun with the colours of their clothing. Outdoor retailers often sell black, grey, beige and khaki apparel, but wearing bright colours in the bush can help us spot you amongst the dense terrain."

Deputy Unit Commander Ryan said the Bush Search and Rescue Unit was often called in to assist with searches.

"Our members are experienced bushwalkers, canyoners and rock climbers who bring specialised skills in remote and rugged areas, which are often many kilometres from the nearest track, fire trail or road," she said.

"Having a positive outcome like this and being able to put our skills and experience to good work for the community is a feeling you can't describe."
