ADVICE TO THE PUBLIC:

Tropical Cyclone Fina is expected to move towards the south today then southwest during Friday and Saturday, taking it across the northwest coast of the Top End. Tropical Cyclone Fina is then likely to move away from the Top End and into the Timor Sea from Sunday.

Most of the North West Coastal Rivers catchments are becoming saturated from the recent showers and storms. Widespread daily rainfall totals over the Flood Watch area during Friday and Saturday are likely to be 50-200 mm, with isolated totals over 300mm possible near the path of the cyclone. Further heavy rainfall is possible during Sunday.

Significant rises in creeks and rivers and areas of flooding are likely throughout the Flood Watch area from late Friday. Many roads may become impassable and some communities and homesteads may become isolated.

Safety advice

Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.

Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.

Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.
