Northern Territory students will soon have the chance to broaden their horizons in Japan, with Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro announcing the "Sharing our history, securing future peace" study tour following her first overseas mission.
Six students (Year 9 and Year 10) will be chosen through a Territory-wide competition to travel to Okinawa in 2026, where they will visit historic sites such as the Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum, the Himeyuri Peace Museum and the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters,
They will also meet defence leaders and gain first-hand insights into the opportunities created through the Territory's deepening relationship with Japan in trade, mining, education, tourism, and defence.
Chief Minister Finocchiaro said Japan is one of the Territory's closest allies and a central partner in regional security and prosperity.
"By giving Territory kids, the chance to experience this first-hand, we're inspiring them to see the opportunities ahead, whether in defence, diplomacy, or leadership, and to consider how they might shape the Territory's future," she said.
The tour will also serve as a pilot for future programs, including reciprocal student exchanges and participation in commemorations such as the Bombing of Darwin.
"The Territory's defence history is unique. We experienced war at our doorstep, and that story is not just history, it is who we are as Territorians: resilient, forward-looking, and deeply connected to our region," Mrs Finocchiaro said.
"For these students, this is a chance not only to learn about our ally's history, but also to share their own."
In our year of action, certainty and security, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is investing in young people, deepening international partnerships, and driving economic growth.
"We want our young people to carry forward our values of service, respect, and courage, while strengthening our place in the Indo-Pacific community," Mrs Finocchiaro said.
"This program is about backing young Territorians to succeed, building stronger ties with our allies, and securing the Territory's future."
Applications are now open.
