The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) is urging residents in central and southern areas of the Northern Territory to have survival plans in place following a large bushfire in Alice Springs this week.
More than 30 career and volunteer firefighters attended a large grassfire in the vicinity of Ilparpa Road, Alice Springs, just before 12pm on Tuesday.
Firefighters fought the bushfire throughout the afternoon, successfully defending several properties and establishing extensive containment lines preventing the fire from impacting homes.
The fire moved into an inaccessible area and was monitored throughout the evening. Through the early hours of Wednesday, NTFRS and Bushfires NT crews further developed containment lines in challenging conditions and high fuel loads, preventing the fire spreading west towards Jane road and Bullen road.
Throughout Wednesday crews continued to battle the fire, with back burning operations and monitoring of the fire ground.
Southern District Officer Stephen Hunter said "After more than 36 hours of operations the fire was contained within established control lines and the remaining small pockets of fire were monitored overnight by crews and NTFRS remotely piloted aircraft systems operators."
"Over the last week we have seen an increase in fire activity around Alice Springs. We encourage all rural residents to ensure they have a bushfire survival plan in place for their family, and to ensure that appropriate 4m fire breaks are in place."
