NYE Fireworks Displays Merged for 8 PM Show

Townsville City Council has made further changes to tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations due to current weather conditions and a severe weather warning for the region.

Mayor Nick Dametto said due to the current weather conditions, midnight fireworks at The Strand and Nelly Bay will also be cancelled.

The announcement follows yesterday's decision to cancel the Sounds on the Sand concert at The Strand and the movie screening and fireworks at Riverway, including food trucks and amusements.

"Instead, fireworks will now be showcased during an earlier 8pm timeslot at the Strand only," he said.

"Combining both the midnight and 8pm Strand fireworks means a bigger, brighter display for everyone to enjoy before weather conditions worsen later tonight."

The adjustment follows advice of enhanced onshore winds and heavy rainfall likely to develop later today, particularly this evening and overnight.

"Despite the weather, we still want to give the community the chance to ring in the New Year safely,"

"Please plan to watch the fireworks from a safe and dry vantage point." Cr Dametto said.

Bus services between The Strand and Dean Park will continue as planned to help people move around safely.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get around and enjoy the celebrations," Cr Dametto said.

Businesses across the city, including The Strand, Palmer Street, and beyond are operating as normal and have some incredible New Year's Eve activities on offer.

"Our local businesses have gone above and beyond to create fantastic experiences tonight," Cr Dametto said.

"I encourage everyone to support them as you celebrate."

Fireworks that were planned for Riverway and Nelly Bay will be repurposed for Australia Day celebrations.

Cr Dametto acknowledged the disappointment but reminded residents this is part of life in North Queensland during the wet season.

"Your safety is our priority," Cr Dametto said.

"Please take care in the wet conditions, keep an eye on Council's channels for any further updates, and have a safe and happy New Year, however you choose to spend it."
