Police were called to reports a car and van had collided on Main South Road in Selwyn at 11.30pm last night.
One person has died and two people are in serious condition in hospital.
Another occupant of one of the vehicles sustained minor injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene.
Police inquiries are continuing.
