Police Search and Rescue responded to an incident yesterday in the bush tracks above Days Bay, Wellington, where a person had become lost.
Thankfully, through the satellite emergency messaging feature on the individual's iPhone they were able to relay their location and facilitate two-way communication with Police. This technology enabled a swift and successful rescue.
While the messaging system worked as intended, Police would like to remind the public of the following:
• Pink markers are not intended for navigation; they typically indicate trap lines, are not maintained, and rarely connect to other tracks. If you are not confident in your bush navigation skills, please stick to tracks marked with orange triangles, unless signage clearly indicates otherwise.
• It is vital to leave detailed trip intentions with a trusted contact before heading into the bush-even for short day walks. Include your planned route and expected return time. This ensures someone can raise the alarm if you do not return as expected and provide accurate information to emergency services.
• Always carry two forms of communication with you.
