Work is set to commence in April for a fenced, off leash dog park at Barry Steggall Park in Swan Hill.
The off leash dog park is the result of off leash dog areas trial and a successful grant application to the Local Parks Program which is supported by the Victoria Government.
Director Development and Planning Heather Green said the construction of the new off leash dog park was a direct result of feedback from the community.
"The masterplan was developed in consultation with interested user groups and pet owners.
"Our consultation process included online survey results from our off leash dog area trial along with feedback from draft plans, and an online forum held in November 2020," Ms Green said.
Ms Green said the $150,000 suite of works for Stage 1 of the masterplan would include:
- Earthworks to improve drainage and ground conditions
- Perimeter fencing and a dividing fence to separate the quiet dog area and main area
- Entry and maintenance gates
- Accessible concrete entry paths
- Internal gravel walking track and areas
- Seating
- Water fountain for humans and pets
- Tree plantings to provide natural shade
- Woodland planting of indigenous trees for dog enrichment area
- Dog waste bags and bins
- New signage.
Ms Green said the comprehensive program of works would begin in April starting with establishment of the new perimeter fencing.
"Perimeter fencing will consist of 350 metres of 1.2 metre high – an aspect of the off-leash dog area that was highlighted as very important to community throughout the trial period and masterplan consultation.
"Our Regulatory Services team consulted extensively with the community and user groups on what should be included in the park," Ms Green said.
"This first stage of the masterplan will provide the aspects most important to community including fencing, water and seating, with additional pet enrichment items within the masterplan to be installed if more funding becomes available," she said.
Ms Green said the program of upgrades would continue throughout the year and is expected to be completed in July.
The Barry Steggall Off Leash Dog Park is supported by the Victorian Government through the Suburban Parks Program.
