Officers followed the man to Station Street, where he entered a house that was being renovated.

The Petersham man was located at the rear of the house where he armed himself with a hammer.

After negotiations with officers, the 47-year-old man was arrested. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of a head injury sustained in the scuffle. He remains in hospital under police guard.
