Officer assaulted; man charged at Inverell

A man has been charged following a brawl at Inverell yesterday morning.

Just before 3am (Sunday 9 June 2019), police were called to the intersection of Waratah Avenue and Willow Place, after reports of a fight between a large group of people in the street.

Officers attached to New England Police District attended and attempted to disperse the crowd of people.

Police will allege while a female Senior Constable was attempting to separate two females, a man grabbed her and threw her to the ground, causing bruising and abrasions to the officer's knees.

A male Senior Constable and Sergeant went to assist the female officer, however the man continued to challenge police, forcing officers to deploy OC spray and a Taser.

The man continued to act aggressively, before eventually being subdued following the use of a police baton.

The 23-year-old man was arrested and taken to Inverell Police Station, where he was later charged with affray, assault police officer during public disorder cause actual bodily harm, assault officer in execution of duty, and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Inverell Local Court on Thursday 20 June 2019.

The three police officers received minor injuries; however, did not require hospitalisation.

During the incident, a police vehicle's side mirror was smashed, and investigators urge anyone with information relating to the damage, or incident, to come forward.
