Northern Territory Police have condemned the behaviour of residents in a Tennant Creek Town Camp after two officers were left with injuries after attending an incident overnight.
Just after 9:15pm police officers received several reports of armed people fighting in a town camp.
On arrival officers observed two men armed with knives, whenit is alleged one the men advanced towards police. Officers directed the man to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so and was tasered by members.
Officers were arresting the offender when family members started to physically attack them, resulting in police withdrawing from the disturbance.
A large rock was thrown at the police vehicle as it was leaving, causing the side passenger window to shatter and cover the officers with glass.
Both officers received cuts to the face and eyes as a result and were taken to the Tennant Creek Hospital for treatment.
Assistant Commissioner for the Southern Region, Martin Dole said police would be conducting investigations to identify those involved in the assault of the two officers.
"This type of behaviour is outrageous," said AC Dole
"Officers were attending calls for police assistance, only to be met by an armed and aggressive mob. Assaults on police will not be tolerated and we will be ensuring those responsible are identified and prosecuted."
