Official Opening of Building C at Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus

Building C OpeningThe Hon Karen Andrews MP and Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker

Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus was proud to officially open its newest building in a ceremony officiated by the Hon Karen Andrews MP, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology and the federal member for McPherson on Thursday, 13 December, 2018.

Building C is the third building to be constructed at Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus at Bilinga. The $43m project was realised through the Federal Educational Investment Fund (EIF) and Southern Cross University funds and has been open to students throughout 2018.

The opening ceremony was officiated with speeches from Southern Cross University Chancellor Nicholas Burton Taylor AM and Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker, with a traditional smoking ceremony and welcome to country by Mr Luther Cora.

The six-level building boasts magnificent views of the ocean and hinterland and houses the new Library, SCU College, School of Law and Justice, technology-rich teaching and learning spaces, a café and an impressive 560-seat lecture theatre – a valuable community asset for the Southern Gold Coast.

The building interior is inspired by the natural beauty of the Gold Coast, with 'beach shack' colours and materials, and sustainable features including carpet made from recycled fishing nets from the Philippines, rainwater collection used for the treatment of air conditioning cooling and toilets. The building's position and use of shutters reduces exposure to solar gain, with less need for cooling.

Building C was built by ADCO Constructions and this year won a 2018 Master Builders Gold Coast Housing and Construction Award, recognised as being one of the city's most innovative new learning facilities.

This Friday Building C will host four graduation ceremonies, with 445 Southern Cross University graduands receiving their testamurs.

Reflective artwork from Bachelor of Social Welfare graduate Victoria Read is on display in the Building C Library and will remain on exhibition until January 26. Victoria works in the disability sector, and uses reflective art to support critical reflection on professional practice, a topic she explored through her Honours research. The exhibition is free and the public are welcome to attend.

Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus is located at Southern Cross Dr Bilinga, QLD, next to the Gold Coast Airport and accessible via Terminal Drive.
