Old City of Perth street furniture rehomed at Perth City Farm

The City of Perth and Perth City Farm are working closely to limit waste and promote recycling and upcycling where possible.

The City of Perth's Waste and Cleaning team, together with City Depot staff, repurposed materials from old street benches, old street litter bins and some trolley wheels, to create a stylish surround for drop off bins at Perth City Farm.

The idea arose from when some of the benches, originally next to the famous Kangaroos outside Council House, were due for a routine refurbishment. Instead of being discarded, they've been given a new life as a sleek new bin surround for Perth City Farm to store their recycled items for Containers for Change.

The creative City Depot team removed the wooden slats from the old benches to make up the main structure. They polished up the tops of some old street litter bins to create holes on the top for the containers. They even upcycled wheels from an old shopping trolley to help the team at Perth City Farm move it.

The City of Perth CEO Michelle Reynolds joined the City of Perth depot staff and Perth City Farm volunteers to unveil the new upcycled bin surrounds.

"We're proud to work with Perth City Farm on the Containers for Change project, and we're pleased our old City street furniture could highlight the value of recycling and the potential when upcycling– I can't wait to see what we can create next." City of Perth CEO Michelle Reynolds said.

Containers for Change is WA's new state-wide container deposit scheme allowing the community to cash in eligible recyclable containers for 10-cents each. You can visit the City of Perth Containers for Change drop-off at 8 Aberdeen Street.
