Old Dubbo Gaol named finalist in NSW tourism awards

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) welcomes the announcement that the Old Dubbo Gaol has been named a finalist in the Cultural Tourism category for the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards.

The NSW Tourism Awards are run by the NSW Government in partnership with Destination NSW to celebrate and acknowledge excellence in business, innovation and exceptional customer service within the state's tourism industry.

Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson recognised the prominence of the awards:

"This is an outstanding achievement for the team at the Old Dubbo Gaol who go above and beyond to deliver a memorable experience to our visitors on a daily basis. It is wonderful for our heritage facility to be recognised as one of the top tourism attractions in NSW."

"The Old Dubbo Gaol is a site of cultural significance for Dubbo and I would like to acknowledge our staff who are all so passionate about bringing its history to life and sharing its colonial past with locals and visitors to our region," Mr Dickerson said.

Council has managed the state heritage site since 1973 and has invested significantly in maintenance and upgrades through Council funds and NSW grant funding to keep its position as an exceptional tourism and educational facility.

Old Dubbo Gaol Operations Coordinator, Julie Webster said "In recent years, we have restored many aspects of the site's authenticity to conserve and showcase the significant buildings, grounds and collections of the Old Dubbo Gaol, whilst providing high-level museum infrastructure and a compelling visitor experience."

"We are excited to show the newly renovated site to our visitors and have already seen a steady increase in visitation and higher dwell time since the recent improvements were completed," Mrs Webster said.

Winners of the NSW Tourism Awards will be announced at a gala awards dinner at Luna Park in Sydney on Thursday, 17 November 2022
