When life takes an unexpected turn for the worse it can force you to do the unthinkable - part ways with your beloved pet. It's a heartbreaking decision to farewell a treasured member of the family but life doesn't always go according to plan.
Miniature poodle Peaches came to the RSPCA's Lonsdale shelter after her elderly owner became unwell and was struggling to care for herself, let alone her little dog.
With a ligament injury in her right hind leg and dental issues, it was clear Peaches needed a bit more care than her owner could provide. With her owner moving into residential care Peaches was surrendered to our Lonsdale shelter.
A poodle with oodles of love
The nine-year-old pooch was quick to adapt to life at Lonsdale. Peaches unbridled enthusiasm was put on show for every staff member or volunteer who dropped by to say hello.
Everyone at Lonsdale quickly fell in love with the small dog, remarking that "she had a tail that wouldn't quit wagging."
Despite all the newfound attention, poor Peaches was struggling to put weight on her right hind leg. Our vet team concluded that Peaches would need minor surgery, which she recovered from in quick succession.
Ain't she a peach
In February 2021, Peachers met her match in Peter and Marlene. Grieving the loss of their 16-year-old poodle Primus the couple were seeking a loving dog to fill the big black hole left behind.
With her spritely and loving nature, Peaches was quick to fill the void. Peter was amused by how quickly Peaches had slotted into their lives. "She's already running the show," he laughed.
"What a personality she has - she bosses us around with her little commands. Peaches settled in from day one."
Fully recovered from her surgery, Peaches now has a spring in her step
As soon as Peaches was given an opportunity to run, she took off in full flight. Peter said that despite her recent surgery she had the energy and speed of a two-year-old.
"When she wants to go for a walk, she just picks up her leash and carries it around until we give in," smiled Peter.
Peaches has loved the sea change, receiving daily walks along the beach, which Peter says she seems to be enjoying even more now that she's having regular treatment for arthritis (a common condition for older dogs).
