On Country Determination For Fifth Wiluna Native Title Claim

  • On Country determination for the Wiluna No. 5 Native Title claim marked by community celebrations
  • Cook Government committed to supporting recognition of Traditional Owners and their connection to Country across the State
  • Native title is recognised across more than three quarters of WA - the largest area of any State or Territory in the country

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch joined the Wiluna Martu people on Country today to celebrate a significant moment - the recognition of their Native Title over their traditional lands.

The Federal Court of Australia held a special determination hearing at Old Station, just outside Wiluna, which was attended by dozens of locals who had come to witness the historic event.

The determination, which was reached by consent, follows the recent Wiluna No. 4 consent determination two months ago and reflects years of dedication, resilience and advocacy by Wiluna families and their representatives.

The Cook Government recognises the Wiluna people as the Native Title holders and affirms their enduring connection to Country, culture and law.

The Tarlka Matuwa Piarku Aboriginal Corporation, the registered Native Title body corporate for the previous Wiluna determinations, will become the body that holds Native Title on trust for the Wiluna Native Title holders in the new determination area.

This determination is the 148th Native Title determination in Western Australia and contributes to Native Title now being recognised across more than three quarters of the State, by far the largest area of any State or Territory in the country.

The WA Government remains committed to supporting recognition of Traditional Owners and their connection to Country, and to coordinating across agencies to implement determinations in ways that respect rights, protect cultural heritage, support land management and create local opportunities.

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch:

"The determination recognises the Wiluna Martu people as the Native Title holders over the fifth Wiluna Native Title claim, and the Cook Government is committed to resolve Native Title matters through agreement-making and seek opportunities to work in partnership with Traditional Owners.

"Our government also looks forward to continuing a strong relationship with the Tarlka Matuwa Piarku Aboriginal Corporation.

"I congratulate the Wiluna Martu people on achieving this significant outcome."
