On hunt for illegal dumpers

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council's Environmental Health team is appealing for public assistance to find those responsible for a serious illegal dumping incident along Lansdowne and Koolah Creek Roads last week.

It's believed that some time between Saturday 7 August and Wednesday 11 August several hundred kilograms of building material, believed to include asbestos, was dumped at a number of different spots along Lansdowne and Koolah Creek Roads.

The waste was found in the following locations:

  • Numerous locations on the side of Lansdowne Road, between Lansdowne and the intersection of Lansdowne Road and Koolah Creek Road
  • Two locations on Koolah Creek Road – near the Koolah Creek Road and Lansdowne Road intersection; and by the creek embankment, approximately one kilometre from the Koolah Creek Road and Lansdowne Road intersection.

Some of the material was bagged in builders plastic or asbestos bags, while at the site of the creek embankment the material was dumped without any containment and has spilled into the creek.

"This is an extremely serious incident that poses a threat to the health of our environment and our community," said Gary Mead, MidCoast Council's Executive Manager of Liveability and Sustainable Development.

"Significant penalties apply for the unlawful disposal of waste, especially the unlawful disposal of asbestos containing materials, carrying fines of up to $4,000 for an individual and $8,000 for a corporation."

Council staff were notified of the dumping last Wednesday with NSW Fire and Rescue also called in to assist with the assessment and safe removal of the waste.

"We would like to hear from anyone in the community who may have seen suspicious activity in the area, who may have information or even dashcam footage during the timeframe being investigated," Gary added.

Anyone who may be able to assist Council with the investigation can phone 7955 7777.
