Online recommendation leads to spike in Cougar Gold interest

Demand for Cougar Gold cheese spiked Thursday following an article in the popular food magazine Bon Appétit about WSU's signature sharp cheddar.

At one point, as many as 78 people were on the ordering site at the same time. During busy seasons, the highest volume current employees have seen at one time is in the mid-30s. Between midnight and 11 a.m. Thursday, the Creamery received 176 web orders, mostly for one can of Cougar Gold from new customers.

Profiled in the magazine's "Highly Recommended" column, writer Jessica Kelly raved about the cheese in a can, sharing how her first bite "started to melt a bit, creating a creamy, silky texture, with a nice sharpness to it. It was one of the best cheddars I'd ever had."

The accolades from a premier gourmet cooking magazine quickly spread, particularly on social media, helping drive the online traffic spike.
