Byron Shire - we are taking part in Sustainable House Day (17 May 2026) and we're urging everyone who's putting sustainability into practice to sign up as an Open Home.

The process is simple: just upload a few photos, provide a short description of your home, and submit your application by Wednesday 11 March at https://sustainablehouseday.com

Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye, said Sustainable House Day is a unique opportunity for the Byron Shire community to learn from one another.

"I love Sustainable House Day because it's about neighbours inspiring neighbours," the Mayor said.

"When people open their homes to visitors, we all get a peek into what is possible, to understand the steps involved, and to hear directly from others about the tangible benefits of choosing sustainability," Mayor Ndiaye said.

"Sustainable House Day shines a light on the many ways people are upgrading to all electric homes, completing smart and thoughtful retrofits, or finding innovative paths to reduce their environmental impact."

Council is inviting residents who have completed (or are progressing) climate resilient builds, passive solar designs, retrofits using low impact materials, or any other sustainability focused improvements, to consider opening their homes.

"We'd love to showcase as many homes as possible to inspire our community, whether people are just beginning their sustainability journey or are ready to take the next big step," Mayor Ndiaye said.

If you've made purposeful changes and are willing to share the insights you gained along the way, your home could be the spark that inspires someone else.
