Operation Starck - Results update 1 - Drug seizures

Northern Territory Police have seized further quantities of cannabis destined for remote communities as part as Operation Starck.

Operation Starck was established by Drug and Organised Crime Squad (DOCS) to disrupt the importation of illicit substances, including cannabis and alcohol, into remote communities. Screening of air and sea freight, included the physical inspection of shipments by DOCS detectives and the use of drug detector dogs from the Dog Operations Unit.

Between Thursday 9 April and Thursday 16 April 2020, police seized approximately 2.3 kilograms of cannabis destined for remote communities in the Northern Territory.

Police estimate the 'street' value of cannabis seized to be upwards of $345,000.

About 1.2 kilograms of Kava, 4 Litres of alcohol and $45,000 cash were also seized during this period.

Detective Senior Sergeant Crispin Gargan said, "The results thus far achieved in terms of the quantities of drugs being seized in relation to Operation Stark are quite concerning."

"The harmful effects of drugs in the community, especially vulnerable remote communities, is well documented. The actions of people in trying to take advantage of those communities is disgraceful and will not be tolerated by Police."

Operation Starck investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information on the importation of illicit substance is urged to contact police on 131 444 or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
