Orange City Council has called for tenders for the athletics track and field component of the Orange Regional Sporting Precinct.
The tender is for design and construct and will include a synthetic track, throwing cage and circles, high jump area, pole vault accessories, triple and long landing pits and steeple chase water jump.
The Orange Regional Sporting Precinct is supported by $74.5 million in government funding - $59.5 million from the NSW Government and $15 million from the Australian Government's Growing Regions Program.
Orange Mayor Tony Mileto said the release of tender was an important step towards delivering the whole precent vision.
"We have been busy getting on with important preliminary works such as roads drainage, parking lots and field construction. We have let the tender for the John Davis OAM Stadium and work will start soon on that element. The athletics track and field zone on Huntley Road will complete the project," Cr Mileto said.
Orange Deputy Mayor and Recreation and Culture Policy Committee Chair Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said the facility would be a major step up for Orange athletes.
"At the moment they run on grass or must travel long distances to experience top shelf surfaces. This track will mean we will have the best on offer here in Orange," Cr Greenhalgh said.
Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty said:
"These upgrades will provide local athletes with the facilities they deserve and create new opportunities for local schools, clubs, and the broader community to engage in sport.
"This tender will deliver a modern, fully synthetic athletics track supported by purpose‑built field event facilities, ensuring the stadium meets national and international standards.
"The Orange Regional Sports Precinct will become a flagship venue for regional and state‑level competition, and this tender is an important step toward realising that goal."
The track will be constructed to World Athletics Standard (class 2). The internal field will be similar construction to the other 8 fields. Class 2 tracks in Australia include the AC Robertson Athletics Track in Melbourne, the AIS Track and Field Centre in Canberra and the Campbelltown Athletics Centre. The Orange track will be approved for national and regional events. Class 1 Facilities are a requirement for global events such Olympics while class 2 tracks comply to World Athletic specifications for events below global meets.
The tender closes on 16 February next year. Construction is anticipated to start in mid 2026. The project timeline will be clearer following the tender process.
The athletics, grandstand, change rooms and photo finish room are part of the tender for the John Davis OAM stadium that was awarded to Zauner construction.
