OSCE Ensures Public Funds Benefit Citizens

Public money should go where it matters most: to schools, hospitals, roads, and services that improve people's daily lives. The OSCE Mission to Skopje supported a public event at the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, bringing together Parliament and the State Audit Office to improve the way state money is spent.

The discussion focused on how Parliament can use audit reports more actively, not only identify problems, but to ensure that institutions correct mistakes and follow up on recommendations.

"Oversight is about protecting taxpayers' money and citizens' trust," said Ambassador Kilian Wahl, Head of the OSCE Mission to Skopje. "Audit reports should not remain in drawers. When they lead to action, public funds are more likely to be used fairly, transparently, and in the best interest of the people.", said Ambassador Wahl.

On the margins of the event, the OSCE donated 15 laptops to the State Audit Office to help auditors work more efficiently, including in monitoring election campaign spending.

Stronger accountability and transparency help ensure that public funds serve citizens and democratic institutions remain trustworthy. When oversight works, people can trust that public money is used responsibly.
