An OSCE workshop brought together representatives of government agencies, system operators, national energy companies and technical universities in Almaty to address emerging challenges linked to the rapid expansion of solar and wind generation in the region.
With Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan scaling up renewable energy deployment, and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan integrating new sources alongside hydropower, the need for co-ordinated solutions to balance power systems and enhance flexibility is becoming increasingly urgent.
The workshop, held on 1-2 April, focused on building practical capacity in renewable energy integration across policy, market design and technical solutions. It also emphasized human capital development and the importance of a just and inclusive energy transition, including advancing gender equality in the energy sector.
Participants engaged in discussions on renewable energy support schemes, electricity market design, system integration challenges, modelling tools and sector coupling, alongside international experts and regional practitioners.
The event was part of the OSCE Regional Task Force on Education for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition in Central Asia (RTEET), implemented in partnership with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) under the OSCE project " Promoting Women's Economic Empowerment in the Energy Sector in Central Asia ." A regional training course on renewable energy integration is also being developed under this initiative.
