Once again, the Kempsey Shire has faced the worst of nature and again shown our strength, resilience and community spirit.
The impact of last week's floods is difficult to fathom. As the waters go down the extent of damage is revealed but for many, especially local farmers and businesses the real cost will only become clear in the weeks and months ahead.
That's why I've been focused on long-term recovery. With support from Member for Oxley, Michael Kemp MP and the Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan MP, this week we've hosted the Premier and four senior state and federal ministers to see the damage for themselves. They were joined by top officials from the NSW Reconstruction Authority, National Emergency Management Agency and the Premier's Department.
We met with farmers, business owners, community members, and emergency services personnel. Their real and heartbreaking stories made it clear: we need more than just loans – we need direct financial support and rapid assessments to repair vital infrastructure.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has pitched in to help us through the initial days of the crisis. Whether its emergency services personnel and volunteers, Council staff working day and night or neighbours helping neighbours – the demonstration of community spirit and strength is amazing.
Since November 2009 there have been 26 natural disaster declarations for the Kempsey Shire with multiple floods, bushfires, intense drought and coastal storms. The Macleay River is both our lifeblood and, at times, our greatest challenge, with much of the 11,500 square kilometre catchment area devastated in this flood.
Despite these challenges, we know how good the Macleay Valley is – and that's why we keep bouncing back.
Recovery Centres are now open and Council's website has all the links to available services and support. It's not the usual country way but please don't hesitate to reach out, share your story, and get support. We'll keep standing together – and we'll keep pushing for the help our community needs.
