A Victoria Police Inspector missed out on filling his police car up with fuel, despite attending a Moorabbin service station twice yesterday morning.
The on-duty officer from southern region was attempting to refuel at a service station on South Road when he observed a Subaru Liberty allegedly displaying stolen number plates about 2am.
It is alleged the driver saw the police vehicle and left in a hurry, damaging the vehicle in the process.
He abandoned the Subaru, which was allegedly stolen from Eastland Shopping Centre, a short distance away and fled on foot.
The officer arrested the 31-year-old man nearby.

After the arrest, the Inspector re-attended the service station to refuel the police car.
This time, he came across another vehicle, a Jeep, which was allegedly displaying stolen plates.
He waited for the two occupants to come out of the service station, then pounced on the offenders and arrested both with the assistance of some colleagues.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee was allegedly stolen from Ashwood on 25 September.
The 31-year-old Seaford man was charged with:
- theft of motor vehicle
- deal with proceeds of crime
- going equipped to steal
- possess methylamphetamine
- possess 1,4-Butanediol
- attempt to traffick methylamphetamine
- attempt to traffick 1,4-Butanediol
- state false name
- disqualified driving
He was bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates' Court on 18 February 2027.
The 24-year-old Berwick woman was charged with deal property suspected proceeds of crime and handle stolen goods.
The 24-year-old Kew man was charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods, deal property suspected proceeds of crime, possess 1,4-Butanediol and possess cannabis.
Both were bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates' Court on 11 January 2027.
