Construction has started on the multi-million-dollar upgrade of Weston Bears Park, with refurbishment of the grandstand, and the building of a new clubroom, changerooms and amenities set to take place over the coming months.
The Australian Government's Growing Regions Program and Cessnock City Council are each providing funding of more than $3 million for the $6.4 million project.
The overhaul will improve comfort and safety, and provide facilities better suited to the community's needs – including the construction of new changerooms, storage areas and amenities. The grandstand will be refurbished to feature a new canteen, clubroom and a wheelchair-accessible seating area. In addition, a new carpark will be built, complete with upgraded drainage, lighting, and landscaping.
Work on the new-look home of Weston Bears Football Club is expected to be finished in early 2026.
Cessnock City Mayor Daniel Watton said increasing the participation of women and girls in sport was a major focus of the project, which was in mind when planning new changerooms and other facilities.
"This key infrastructure project will support the club's existing needs and provide a platform for its future growth," said Clr Watton.
"It will create a more welcoming environment for players and spectators alike, and enable the Weston Bears to increase and better support its female base."
Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi said: "It's fantastic to see work kicking off on the upgrade to Weston Bears' home ground. This $3 million investment from the Federal Government is about backing local sport, supporting grassroots clubs, and making sure our community has top-quality facilities for years to come."
Weston Bears FC is one of Australia's most historic football clubs. Formed in 1907, the club is represented in several levels of competition, including the Northern NSW division of the National Premier League.
