Oxfam welcomes significant sanctions law

Oxfam Australia

Oxfam Australia has welcomed the passing of significant legislation by the Parliament that will help hold violators of human rights to account.

Chief Executive Lyn Morgain said it was pleasing to see that the Magnitsky-style sanctions bill was passed unopposed.

"This country by no means has a clean human rights record, itself. However, it is critical that we have the mechanisms in place to ensure Australia does not become a haven for those who show blatant disregard for human rights and the rule of law, and who abuse their power," she said.

"It's important for the people of Australia to see our representatives in Parliament working together to achieve positive outcomes guided by shared principles such as this, and we hope to see more of it."
