Surf Coast Shire Council will open the Painkalac Creek estuary in Aireys Inlet on 19 August 2021 to prevent localised flooding in the area as rainfall is expected from Friday onwards over the weekend and into next week.

The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority has provided approval for the opening on a scientific risk assessment. This takes into consideration the relative economic, social and environmental impacts of artificially opening the estuary.

Further detailed information about the creek and its catchment can be found in the Painkalac Creek Environmental Flows study: (Corangamite CMA Knowledge Base (ccmaknowledgebase.vic.gov.au).
