Pair Nabbed After Hastings Car Chase

As stated by Acting Senior Sergeant Matthew Wilkin, Eastern District Command Centre:

Eastern District Police have two people in custody following a serious fleeing driver incident through Hastings and Flaxmere this evening.

Police spotted the vehicle on Clive Street just before 6:15pm, it had been involved in a separate fleeing driver incident yesterday and police signalled for it to stop.

However, the driver fled, travelling through rural areas and into Havelock North Township.

Police successfully spiked the tires of the car, but the driver kept going despite the wheels sparking and car smoking and on fire, endangering other members of the public who were on the road.

Police followed the vehicle at distance, finally closing in and blocking it on Flaxmere Avenue.

In a desperate bid to flee the scene, the offender rammed two Police patrol cars. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the vehicles have sustained damage.

A 29-year-old man and 28-year-old woman have been taken into custody without incident.

They both have existing warrants to arrest on separate matters and will be facing new charges stemming from the incident.

Cordons are in place as Police work at the scene.
