Paramedic assaulted while treating patient, man arrested in Sydney

A man has been arrested after NSW Ambulance paramedics were allegedly threatened – and one was assaulted – as they treated a woman who had collapsed at a bar at King Street Wharf this morning, NSW Police say.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended Wheat Road about 12.15am (Sunday 26 August 2018), after paramedics called for urgent assistance.

Police attended and provided protection to the paramedics, who were treating a woman – believed to be aged in her 20s – who was unconscious.

Officers found group of people with the woman had become agitated and aggressive, threatening the paramedics, with one man allegedly pushing one of the paramedics.

Police were forced to provide a physical escort of the paramedics and patient to the ambulance, due to the behaviour of the crowd.

The Public Order and Riot Squad (PORS) crews were called to assist at the scene with the crowd. They have also been deployed to St Vincent’s Hospital.

One man has been arrested over the alleged assault; he has been taken to Day Street Police Station.

A second man was arrested for hinder police. Inquiries are continuing into possible charges.

The woman has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment; her condition is unknown.

Officers are now attempting to establish how the woman came to be unwell and are speaking with witnesses at the scene.
