Paranormal Horror Author To Return To Mount Gambier

Australian award-winning author JJ Carpenter will launch her latest paranormal horror novel 'The First House', at the Mount Gambier Library on Tuesday 27 October 2026 at 6:30pm.

The event marks JJ Carpenter's return to the Library following her popular 2025 visit to discuss her historical thriller The Haunting of Kenmore Asylum, a novel inspired by true events.

"JJ's first visit offered fascinating insight into the research behind the book, including firsthand accounts of activities inside the abandoned psychiatric hospital," City of Mount Gambier Community Development Coordinator Kristi Brooks said.

"JJ's extensive research included interviews with former nurses who shared their personal experiences of unexplained paranormal activity within the facility, which was notoriously known for its controversial practices."

Known for unearthing hidden stories through thrilling and atmospheric narratives, JJ writes gothic and psychological fiction grounded in Australian history. Her work explores themes of trauma, memory and survival, often set in haunted locations where the past continues to influence the present.

Inspired by Highfield Historic Site in Stanley, Tasmania, The First House draws on the property's reputation for unexplained paranormal activity, its dark colonial history and the tragic events associated with the site dating back to the 1830s.

JJ spent time touring the historic property and researching its history through books, essays and firsthand accounts.

"Following a tour of Highfield, I fell in love with the property," Ms Carpenter said.

"I see the house as a scar and a wound, reflecting both the tragic history of colonial times and the displacement and harsh treatment of local First Nations people, alongside the loss and accidents recorded at the property."

"While inspired by Highfield, this novel is more fictionalised in comparison to my previous novels."

The First House follows Murphy, who inherits a decaying coastal mansion with a haunted reputation after experiencing a series of personal setbacks. Hoping for a fresh start, she soon discovers the house harbours far more than restless spirits. As strange events escalate and long-buried secrets emerge, Murphy realises the house is not simply haunted, it has been waiting for her.

The Library team expects the event to attract readers interested in suspense, mystery and the paranormal.

"Haunted tales continue to captivate readers, transforming ordinary places into sites of intrigue and leaving audiences eager to uncover what happens next," Ms Brooks said.

The free event will include an author presentation, audience question-and-answer session, and the opportunity to purchase signed copies of The First House and The Haunting of Kenmore Asylum.
