Parkes Shire Council is asking residents in Parkes and Peak Hill to use water conservatively over the coming days as prolonged extreme heat continues to place significant pressure on the local water supply system. Parkes and Peak Hill are currently on Level 1 restrictions.

Parkes Shire is currently experiencing sustained temperatures above 40°C for several consecutive days, creating considerable stress across Council's water infrastructure. The intense heat has led to power surges that have affected the operation of major water pumps across the network. In addition, the extreme conditions have impacted other critical electrical components, including cooling systems at pump stations and equipment involved in water treatment processes.

At the same time, water demand from the community has increased significantly as residents seek relief from the ongoing heat. The combination of rising demand and reduced system capacity means the water supply network is under considerable strain.

Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability Andrew Francis said, "Council is not increasing formal water restrictions above Level 1 at this time, with rain forecast next week that may help ease current conditions. However, if extreme conditions persist, Council may need to consider implementing higher water restrictions to protect the system and ensure continued supply to essential services and households."

Council is asking all residents to use water sensibly and conservatively during this period. Small actions taken across the community can make a real difference, including:

  • Limiting outdoor watering
  • Taking shorter showers
  • Avoiding non-essential water use
  • Being mindful of water use during peak demand times

Council will continue to closely monitor system performance and water demand and will keep the community informed if conditions change.

Parkes Shire Council thanks residents for their patience, cooperation and community-minded approach during this period of extreme weather.
