Payroll Tax Rebate Scheme extended to 30 June 2024

Peter Gutwein,Premier

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is continuing to help young Tasmanians into the workforce by giving them the skills and training they need for the future.

Legislation has been introduced today to extend the Payroll Tax Rebate Scheme to 30 June 2024, providing payroll tax relief to businesses that employ apprentices, trainees and youth employees.

In recent years, the Scheme has been very successful helping thousands of Tasmanians to gain an apprenticeship or traineeship, and giving young people the opportunity to work.

The Scheme supports around 3,000 apprentice, trainee and youth employee placements each year.

Our economy is strong, and over the year to the December 2021 quarter, State Final Demand has grown 5.8 per cent, underpinned by annual growth in business investment of 13 per cent, public investment of 9.5 per cent, and household consumption of 4.5 per cent.

Employment is at near-record levels and our unemployment rate is at an unprecedented 3.8 per cent.

Extending the Payroll Tax Rebate Scheme will support skills, create more jobs, and help more young Tasmanians into work as we deliver our plan to secure Tasmania's future.
