Pedestrian Critically Injured in E-Bike Crash at Barrack Heights

A pedestrian is in a critical condition after allegedly being struck by an e-bike in the states Lake Illawarra region.

About 10.50pm yesterday (Sunday 4 October 2026), emergency services responded to reports that a pedestrian had been hit by an e-bike on Shellharbour Road – near Sunset Avenue – Barrack Heights.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the pedestrian – a 16-year-old girl – at the scene before she was airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District have been told that a second e-bike was allegedly in the vicinity at the time of the incident. Following the collision with the girl one of the e-bikes left the location without rendering any assistance.

Police spoke with the 35-year-old male e-bike rider that remained at the scene.

He was submitted to a breath test which allegedly returned a positive reading.

The man was arrested and taken to Oak Flats Police Station where it will be alleged he underwent a breath analysis that returned a reading of 0.135.

It will be further alleged the man also returned a positive result to cocaine and methylamphetamine. A further analysis of these samples with be undertaken.

A crime scene was established and later examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

The e-bike allegedly ridden by the 35-year-old man has been seized for forensic examination.

No charges have been laid at this stage.

Police would like to speak with the second e-bike rider that left the scene and are urging the person to contact police.
