Works to extend the much-loved Memorial Drive Pelican Boardwalk in Forster will begin on Thursday 28 August.
The new 120-metre section of suspended boardwalk over Wallis Lake will extend the scenic walk along the Forster foreshore.
"This exciting new over-water experience will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities and will provide an excellent vantage point for water activities and other major events throughout the year," said Liam Bulley, Executive Manager Public Spaces.
The project, awarded to GPM Marine Constructions, is expected to be completed by late November 2025, weather permitting.
Access to parts of John Holland Park, the gravel car park on Point Road at Tuncurry boat ramp and the Memorial Drive foreshore area will be restricted during the works. Some parts of the boardwalk will be closed for water access at times during construction.
Contractors will manage the works to maximise access in the area.
As part of the works, a new kayak launching system will be added to the lower platform off the boardwalk.
"The kayak launching system has been designed to improve access to the Breckenridge Channel for swimmers, kayakers and paddle boarders, improving safety and accessibility for all," said Mr Bulley.
External consultants liaised with the Forster Local Aboriginal Land Council regarding the cultural significance of the foreshore area. A number of environmental studies were undertaken as part of the approval process.
Permanent interpretive signage with information on the cultural, ecological and historical significance of the site will be installed.
Council has been working on improvements to the walk over the past few years, after consultation with the business community and Chamber.
"Funding from the Australian Government's Local Roads, Community and Infrastructure Grants helped to replace the deteriorated timber decking in the existing boardwalk back in 2022," said Mr Bulley.
The boardwalk extension project has been funded via two streams – the NSW Government's Regional Tourism Activation Fund Round 2 - $2,649,501 and Forster Developer Contributions, with a total project value of $3,507,668.
