Edward River Council has approved plans for the internal redevelopment of the Peppin Heritage Centre, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of one of Deniliquin's most valued cultural assets.

Endorsed at Council's Ordinary Meeting on Tuesday 21 October, the works outlined in the approved Development Application will upgrade the centre's museum space, supporting its role as a place of cultural storytelling and community connection.

The refurbishment works have been made possible through $714,000 in funding from the NSW Government. This investment will support the design of new exhibitions, improved lighting, and a refreshed curatorial approach to the Centre's historical collections - highlighting the diverse cultural heritage of the Edward River Region.

The refurbishment project will modernise the museum, creating a more interactive and immersive experience for visitors, with the inclusion of multimedia exhibits.

Eye-catching design features and a reconfigured space will make the museum more attractive and engaging for visitors, while continuing to focus on Deniliquin's rich history and expanding upon existing storylines.

The redevelopment has been designed to respect the heritage significance of the building. While internal upgrades will improve functionality and visitor experience, the external façade will remain unchanged, preserving the Centre's historical character.

Edward River Council CEO Jack Bond said the approval reflects Council's commitment to supporting cultural infrastructure.

"This is an important milestone for the Peppin Heritage Centre and for our region," Mr Bond said.

"The approved plans will allow us to move forward with a project that shares and celebrates our local history. We're grateful for the NSW Government funding that makes this possible."

The approved scope of works includes:

• Museum infrastructure and fit-out

• Conservation works and painting

• New exhibition displays and upgraded museum space

• Improved collection storage

• Cosmetic improvements to internal components

• Restoration of heritage features such as fireplaces

Mayor of Edward River Council, Ashley Hall said the redevelopment represents a significant investment in the region's cultural future.

"We are excited to enhance the museum's role in showcasing our region's rich history, while ensuring the building's heritage is protected. We look forward to seeing this project progress over the coming months," the Mayor said.

Located at 2–14 Napier Street, Deniliquin, the Peppin Heritage Centre sits within the town's CBD, adjacent to the Edward River and National Bridge. The Centre is a State Heritage Listed site and a key destination for visitors and locals alike.

The works will be carried out within the eastern portion of the building, which also houses the Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre. The Crossing Café, also located on site, will not be affected.

Council will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
