Edward River Council and River Region Early Education (RREE) are celebrating a major step forward in the delivery of the Perrin Park Early Learning Centre, with the project's Development Application (DA) approved by the independent Western Regional Planning Panel.
The approval brings the region a step closer to delivering much-needed childcare places and helping address one of the most significant challenges facing local families, employers and the broader community.
As a Council-related development valued at more than $5 million, the DA was assessed as a Regionally Significant Development with the outcome determined by the independent Western Regional Planning Panel. Following an initial assessment by Council planning staff and a determination briefing session, the Panel unanimously approved the development.
Mayor Ashley Hall said the approval was an exciting step forward for a project that will have lasting benefits for both current and future generations.
"This is fantastic news for our community and another important milestone in delivering a project that will make a real difference for local families - and new families to our community," Cr Hall said.
"We know the shortage of childcare places is having a significant impact across our region. Families are often facing long waitlists and limited options, while employers are finding it harder to attract and retain workers.
"This project would not be where it is today without the support of key partners and advocates. We are incredibly grateful to Origin Energy for its $2 million commitment and to Helen Dalton MP for her strong advocacy on behalf of our community."
River Region Early Education General Manager, Felicity Michael said that she is pleased with the project progress.
"This approval is a welcome development for everyone involved in the project and, most importantly, for the families who will benefit from these additional childcare places," Ms Michael said.
"Quality early learning gives children the best possible start in life, and we're proud to be working alongside Council to help meet the increasing demand for childcare in our region.

Council Chief Executive Officer Jack Bond said the approval reflected strong progress on a project that has been driven by a clear and demonstrated community need.

The Perrin Park Early Learning Centre forms part of a broader commitment to increasing access to early childhood education and care across the Edward River region, ensuring families have greater access to the services they need to live, work and thrive locally.
The approval marks another important step in bringing the project to life and delivering additional childcare places for the community.
