Australian company Planet Innovation has opened a new cleanroom at their facility in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill.
The health innovation and commercialisation company said it has invested in the cleanroom as part of its broader investment strategy that includes a focus on enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. It said the cleanroom will house the production of sterile consumables and regulated medical technology products.
Planet Innovation said the cleanroom will benefit local innovators, encourage more to remain in Australia as they navigate the path to commercialisation and could create in excess of 700 engineering and manufacturing jobs over the next five year.
Co-CEO and co-founder Stuart Elliott said, "Planet Innovation bridges a critical gap in Australia's medtech sector, providing product development and manufacturing capabilities needed to create and commercialise sophisticated, connected products of the future.
"The opening of our new cleanroom will benefit hundreds of suppliers, startups and medtech innovators in the local ecosystem, encouraging more local companies to remain in Australia as they progress towards commercialisation, keeping valuable skills and IP on-shore."
Victoria's minister for industry support and recovery Martin Pakula and innovation minister Jaala Pulford officially opened the cleanroom earlier this week.
Minster Pulford said, "Planet Innovation is a brilliant local medtech manufacturing company doing incredible work that has real impact on the lives of Victorians and people around the world. We know by fostering and supporting our innovators, we can overcome the challenges we're faced with and create a stronger economic future for Victoria.
"Take for example, in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Victorian Government looked to local manufacturers to produce ventilators for our medical community. We were more than proud to see Planet Innovation deliver the first Notus ventilators in June 2020. Planet Innovation is a shining example of how Victoria can excel in the global medtech sector."
