Colac Otway Shire Council has supported a proposed Hungry Jack's outlet in Colac, with conditions in place to protect local amenity.

Councillors voted at a Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday to issue a notice of Decision to Grant a Permit for buildings and works at 378-386 Murray Street.

The proposed development involves a 236-square-metre restaurant, a drive-through, advertising signage, 13 car parking spaces and six bicycle spaces.

The former Tyrepower site, on the corner of Murray and Armstrong streets, is within the Commercial 1 Zone.

The permit would include conditions to protect amenity and traffic safety in the area, including controls on construction management, parking, vehicle crossings, landscaping, noise management, lighting and signage.

Mayor Jason Schram welcomed business investment in the shire.

"Every new business that chooses Colac Otway is a vote of confidence in our region, creating employment and stimulating surrounding businesses and services," Mr Schram said.

"Council welcomes projects that activate underused sites, create jobs and bring new energy to our CBD," he said.

Cr Schram said Council conditions on the permit responded to community feedback.

"We had a good response from the developer to the local issues raised, and met with the Department of Transport and Planning onsite to ensure traffic safety remains a priority for this development. We will be asking the Department for further reviews because the intersection beside this site is one locals have always had safety concerns about."

Other recent developments in Colac include construction of a new BCF store in Murray Street. Vacant shopfronts are also attracting new tenants, including a medical imaging practice in the Aldi complex, and vacant shops being tenanted in the Coles complex.
