Point Cook Road Ready For Major Intersection Upgrade

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is upgrading one of the west's busiest intersections, with a major milestone reached on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams today announced Australian-owned and operated company BMD Constructions has been awarded the contract to deliver the project.

The upgrade will replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights, build a new freeway off-ramp, and provide safer pedestrian crossings.

The project will help cater for Melbourne's growing west - improving traffic flow and reducing travel times for an estimated 28,000 road users daily.

The project will also provide a significant boost to local economy, creating an estimated 550 new jobs - 205 direct jobs and 345 indirect jobs.

A site compound has been set up on Central Avenue to serve as the base for construction activities. Preliminary works are underway, with major construction to begin in January 2026 and completion expected in 2027.

Nearby the Central Avenue Upgrade, which was announced earlier this year as part of the Albanese and Allan Labor Government's $1.2 billion Road Blitz, will add extra lanes to Central Avenue between Lunn Court and Skehan Boulevard in Altona Meadows.

The project is currently in the planning stage and will improve safety, reduce travel times and cater for population growth.

As stated by Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams

"Locals have told us they want safer, more reliable roads - and that's exactly what this upgrade will deliver."

"With new traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and extra lanes, we're improving traffic flow and making this intersection safer for everyone who uses it."

As stated by Member for Point Cook Matthew Hilakari

"The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade will help get locals home sooner and safer, including members of the community who choose to walk or cycle."

"This project isn't just about improving travel - It's about supporting local jobs and building a safer, more connected community."
